How to support your child with eating a healthy meal

We all know feeding Young children can be challenging at times. Toddlers usually have their minds made up of the foods they or dislike. It is not uncommon for young children to have food they favor. As a parent you may experience up’s and down’s regarding your child’s palate. The most important thing to remember is be sure to introduce healthy foods to your child. Healthy foods come from the following food groups vegetables, protein, calcium, Fruits , carbohydrates. Broccoli, beans, milk or dairy products, strawberries and pasta. Here are some tips that can help when introducing healthy foods to your child.

1. Show interest in the food your introducing during meal times in eating with your child even if they are still being fed. Ex: I really like carrots they are so yummy and good for you.

2. Try to introduce on name food group at a time then add a new one to a food your child likes.

3. Look at alternatives for foods in food groups to make.  Sure your child gets the proper nutrients. Ex: If they won’t eat a particular type of cheese then try a different brand or you can introduce yogurt.

4. Minimize unnecessary sugar intake.

5.As a snack try whole grain crackers or fruits such as pears, strawberries, oranges, green apple slices, blueberries, raspberries.

6. You should introduce a meal for about 30 minutes and if your child has not shown interest then move on.

7. Remember toddlers may need to see new food 12-30 times before it is accepted.

8. Children are also very sensory driven give them the opportunity to touch, smell, taste and touch the foods you are feeding them.
